Electronic Cigarette – a healthy replacement for the tar-based cigarette uses electronic liquid as its fuel. This fuel is also known as e-liquid, e-juice or nicotine solution and is vaporized to create aerosol mist, which is a suspension of liquid and solid particles in air.
Components of Electronic Liquid
An electronic liquid primarily consists of three ingredients:
a) PG (Propylene glycol) or VG (Vegetable glycerin)
b) Nicotine
c) Flavoring
a) PG (Propylene glycol) or VG (Vegetable glycerin): Propylene glycol is an organic compound while Vegetable glycerin is a polyol compound. Both are clear, colorless, nearly odorless and do not contain viscous liquids.
b) Nicotine: Nicotine solution is added to electronic liquid in order to suit the user’s preference. Buyer has an option to purchase pre-filled cartridges with low, medium, high or extra high levels of nicotine in it.
Liquids are said to have low levels of nicotine if the concentration of nicotine is six to eight mg per ml of liquid. The medium dose has 10 to 14 mg of nicotine per one ml of liquid while high dosage refers to a concentration of 16 to 18 mg per ml. Extra high dosages are also available in the market with nicotine concentration level as high as 24 to 36 mg per ml.
The nicotine concentration is printed on the electronic liquid cartridge.
c) Flavors: A number of flavors for electronic cigarettes are available in the market and forms an important component of the electronic liquid. Some of them are flavored to imitate the traditional cigarette flavors like the menthol or regular tobacco. A few other flavors provide the same taste and sensation as famous brands like Marlboro or Davidoff. More recently, a wide variety of food-based flavors have flooded the market. These include vanilla, coffee, strawberry, cola etc.
Composition of Electronic Liquid
Generally, an electronic liquid has the following concentration percentages:
Water – 15%
Flavoring – 15%
PG (Propylene glycol) or VG (Vegetable glycerin) – 70%
However, if nicotine is added, the concentration changes to:
Water – 10%
Flavoring – 10%
PG (Propylene glycol) or VG (Vegetable glycerin) – 60%
Nicotine – 20%
An electronic liquid contains around 5ppm heavy metals, 10ppm chlorides, 30ppm chlorinated compounds and 20ppm sulphates.
The pH level is kept at 7.
A Quantity Comparison
According to a study, about 1 ml of electronic liquid provides approximately the same number of puffs as a pack of 20 cigarettes.
